ART IN THE WORLD

Mr. Daniel Ondich

Summer Q1

2008-2009

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This class is designed to introduce you to the World’s people and their cultures and histories. We will concentrate on artistic attributes of various regions of the world. You will leave this class with a better appreciation of the diversity of the world and an increased understanding of your own culture history and art.

PURPOSE

"World History should be studied because of the increasing global connections in the areas of commerce, politics, technology and communications, transportation, and migration and resettlement. These increasing connections make an understanding of the history of the world’s many cultures especially important in fostering the respect and understanding required in a connected and interdependent world." (MDE, 2004, p.2)

"The geographically literate person knows where important things are, why they are located in those places and the significance of the locational patterns of the world. Furthermore, she comprehends the nature and significance of multiple connections between people and places around the world." (MDE, 2004, p.42)

COURSE GOALS

Students will gain a deep understanding of the influences culture has on artistic expression....

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Much of what you will learn in this course will come during time in the classroom. It is vital that you attend class on a regular basis. A percentage of your grade will depend on attendance and participation that cannot be made up (excused absences do not count against your grade). If you know that you will be absent, please notify me prior to the absence. Participation includes but is not limited to: attendance, classroom involvement, use of class time and classroom behavior.

GRADING

The overall grade will be calculated using the following percentages. You will only be graded and given credit for work completed. To receive full course credit for this class all work must be completed.

The following system will be used to calculate you letter grade: 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, and below 60% = incomplete. Progress reports will be posted periodically to enable you to self-manage your grade.

LATE WORK

It is the student’s responsibility to come to class each day and finish assignments by the due date. Acceptance of late work will be handled on a case by case basis and may result in receiving a lower grade or reduced credit for the course.

EXPECTATIONS

It is expected that everyone in this class will respect each other, guests, school staff, the teacher, and school property. Inappropriate behavior or repeated disruptions will not be tolerated and will result in meeting with me, parental involvement and/or removal from class. Hats and cell phones will not be allowed.

SPECIAL MATERIALS NEEDED

You will need to bring a pen or pencil and notebook to class every day. Colored pencils and a daily planner are highly recommended. If materials are forgotten a pencil will be lent to you and must be returned at the end of class.
